WAXAHACHIE — Senior Night for the state-ranked Waxahachie Lady Indians against DeSoto went precisely as planned.
The 17th consecutive win for 6A No. 18 (35-10, 12-0) Waxahachie came in straight-set fashion (25-12, 25-17, 25-17) inside Mike Turner Gymnasium.
Waxahachie previously locked into its 21st consecutive playoff berth with a straight-set win against Cedar Hill this past Tuesday. All 21 playoff berths have come under head coach Sandy Faussett-Stoops.
The 17 consecutive wins by the Lady Indians trails only Prosper (19), Houston Cypress Ranch (23), Plano West (26) and Arlington Martin (25) in Class 6A. Neither West nor Martin played in the annual 68-team Volleypalooza tournament that pits the best-of-the-best in Texas against each other over four days.
As for Tuesday’s win, the stats weren’t exactly stellar for the Lady Indians, which can be chalked up to their technically sound performance on the court.
Georgi Horn led all hitters with 13 kills, while Amber Morgan sent down 9 and Mia Sanchez, Tionna Owens and Savannah Johnson each had 4.
Taylor Cavazos (25) and Maddie Fuller (23) provided the on-target sets for those kills.
Fuller also led the team with 22 digs. Brennan Ramirez (15) and Morgan (12) also showed up big along the back line.
Waxahachie closes out the regular season with away matches against (28-11, 11-1) Mansfield and (24-17, 6-6) Mansfield Lake Ridge.
A win Friday against the Mansfield Lady Tigers will clinch a District 11-6A championship for the Lady Indians.
Mansfield won a non-district match in three sets, 25-20, 12-25, 26-24, on Aug. 13. The Lady Indians then won the first district match at home in four sets, 25-17, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19.
Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. Friday in Mansfield. The final regular-season match against Lake Ridge is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25.
