WACO — Each member of the 15th-ranked Waxahachie Lady Indian volleyball team had a 6A bi-district crown to wear on Halloween.
The Lady Indians swept (21-17) Hutto, 25-10, 25-13, 25-15, at Midway High School on Monday in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. Waxahachie improved to 38-10 on the season and has now won 21 consecutive matches, which included a perfect 14-0 run through District 11-6A and a top-25 TGCA state ranking.
The Lady Indians used a balanced front-row attack to drown the Hippos. Tionna Owners (9), Mia Sanchez (7), Amber Morgan (6) and Georgi Horn (5) led the team in kills on a combined 30 assists from Maddie Fuller (16) and Taylor Cavazos. Owens added three total blocks, Fuller had 16 digs and Morgan chipped in 13 more digs in the win.
Sanchez announced her verbal commitment to Henderson State University, a Division II program located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on Tuesday.
The Lady Indians will face (24-14) Mesquite Horn at 6:30 p.m. Friday inside the gymnasium at Lancaster High School.
The Jaguars finished third in District 10-6A, which was won by (25-15, 12-0) Rockwall and behind (17-22, 9-3) Rockwall-Heath.
Waxahachie is 5-0 against common opponents with wins against Allen, Timber Creek, Frenship and DeSoto (twice), while Horn is 2-2 against the same field (wins vs Frenship, DeSoto; losses against Allen, Timber Creek).
