CORSICANA — The 1oth-ranked Waxahachie Lady Indians are headed to the 6A regional tournament for the first time in program history.
Waxahachie triumphed in a five-set thriller against Hewitt “Don’t Call Us Waco” Midway on Tuesday night in the 6A Region II quarterfinal championship, 25-18, 24-26, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-12.
Four players reached double-digit kills, led by Georgi Horn’s 14 on 27 attempts (.407 hit percentage). Tionna Owens (12 kills, 5 blocks), Amber Morgan (12 kills, 7 blocks), Mia Sanchez (11) and Hannah Morgan (9) also benefitted from on-target sets by Maddie Fuller (27) and Taylor Cavazos (22).
Maddie and Abby Fuller combined for 38 digs, while Cavazos and Brennan Ramirez added 15 and 14, respectively.
The victory was the 40th of the season (10 losses) for the Lady Indians. They last won 40 games in 2018 (44-5, third-round loss to Southlake Carroll). Waxahachie also won 40+ matches in 2016 (43) and 2011 (42).
Waxahachie will face (41-9) No. 9 The Woodlands in the UIL Region II tournament at 4 p.m. Friday in Lufkin. The winner of the 6A Region II semifinal match will face the winner of (27-16) Rockwall and (41-8) Bridgeland at noon Saturday.
