It took three possessions, a little of four minutes and an impressive defensive effort for the Ennis Lions to secure the win Friday against Terrell.
There should be an emphasis placed on impressive defensive effort too, as the Lions limited the Tigers to 46 total yards of offense on the evening. Yes, that number is across all four quarters and 48 minutes of play.
Ennis, meanwhile, amassed 298 yards in the 37-0 victory, the fourth win to one loss for the Lions this season.
Following a punt on the opening drive, the Lions offense needed just three plays on its second trip onto the field for Collin Drake to find Laylon Spencer for a 31-yard touchdown pass and 7-0 lead.
Drake then capped an 11-play, 58-yard drive — one that featured 10 rushes — with a 2-yard touchdown run on the ensuing Ennis drive for a 14-0 lead with 13 seconds to play in the first quarter.
The Lions added a safety with 8:41 to play in the second quarter and Dyllan Santos rushed in from 1-yard out about four minutes later to send Ennis into the half up 23-0.
Devion Beasley (9:12, 4Q) and Camden Castillo (2:07, 4Q) later added touchdown runs of 2 and 6 yards, respectively.
Ennis picked up 19 first downs to the six gained by Terrell on the evening.
The Lions were also penalized just three times for 20 yards and did not turn the football over.
Drake finished the game with 132 passing yards and one touchdown on 14-of-20 through the air. Spencer pulled down five of those passes for 71 yards, while Azain Brown had three catches for 25 yards.
Beasley led the Lions rushing attack with 19 totes for 119 yards and one score. Camden Castillo added 24 yards and one touchdown on five carries.
The Lions improved to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in District 8-5A. They return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday against (5-0, 3-0) Royse City at Lion Memorial Stadium in Ennis.
