Ellis County Football Friday Roundup: Week 5 (Sept. 24)

Six Ellis County teams picked up wins during week five of the high school football season. Though district play has begun for a few programs, there are still a handful that wrapped up non-district play this week as we head into the halfway point of the season.

Stats, standout players and recaps will be added throughout the weekend.

CLASS 6A

Mansfield Lake Ridge 21, WAXAHACHIE 30

CLASS 5A 

Sulphur Springs 14, No. 4 ENNIS 47

Ennis punted on its first possession Friday night at home against Sulphur Springs. The state-ranked Lions then scored six first-half touchdowns and never punted again in the 47-14 homecoming win.

The victory at Lion Memorial Stadium also improved No. 4 Ennis to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in District 8-5A Division II.

The Lions played ball control shortly after jumping out to a 23-0 first-quarter lead. They ultimately outgained the Wildcats 379 total yards to 219.

Ennis quarterback Jackson Gilkey completed 11-of-his-17 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

Freshman wideout Gracen Harris continued his torrid start to the season with eight catches for 161 yards and one touchdown. He now has 32 catches for 642 yards (128.4YPG) and seven touchdowns.

Ennis received rushing touchdowns from Gilkey (2-10), Jace Berry (2-13) and Devion Beasley (8-46).

The Lions were flagged just once for six yards and did not commit a turnover.

Ennis returns to action Friday, Oct. 8 on the road against (1-4, 0-2) North Forney. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

MIDLOTHIAN 31, Birdville 7

The Midlothian Panthers overcame four lost fumbles to comfortably defeat Birdville 31-7 in a District 4-5A tilt Friday at Birdville Fine Arts Complex.

Three of those fumbles came in the first half, which saw Midlothian take a 13-7 lead into the locker room. The fourth hit the turf on the Panthers’ first drive of the third quarter.

Midlothian ultimately used its slot-T ground attack to outgain the (2-2, 0-1) Birdville Hawks 465 total yards to 203. The Panthers rushed for 388 yards on 46 carries, which helped keep the clock moving. The pace also improved Midlothian to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in 4-5A following a bye week. 

Jordon Richburg led the Panthers with 15 carries for 173 yards and two touchdowns. LJ Adineran also added a pair of scores on seven totes for 64 yards. 

Quarterback Drew Wendel completed 5-of-his-9 passes for 51 yards. 

Midlothian returns to district play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1 at home against (3-1, 1-0) Colleyville Heritage. 

KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM will host a pregame tailgate party outside the stadium gates from 5-7 p.m. with t-shirt and pizza giveaways.
